Let's talk about antibiotics

I was on antibiotics for over two months. At the hospital, I was on several different kind of IV antibiotics. And when I got home, for the first three weeks I was on one kind of IV antibiotics and one in pills form. After they took out the IV line, I did one more week of antibiotic pills.

While antibiotics essentially saved my life and are crucial for treating bacterial infections, they can also disrupt the natural balance of the body's microbiome and cause other side effects.

Antibiotics disrupts the gut microbiome. Antibiotics can kill beneficial bacteria in the gut, leading to an imbalance in the microbiome. This can result in digestive issues such as diarrhea, bloating, and abdominal pain. Disrupting the gut microbiome can also make the body more susceptible to infections.

The disruption of the microbiome can affect the immune system's ability to function properly, as the gut flora plays a role in our immune system.

Taking probiotics during and after antibiotic treatment can help replenish beneficial bacteria in the gut and reduce the risk of antibiotic-associated side effects. Eating a balanced diet rich in fiber, fermented foods, and prebiotics can also support gut health during antibiotic treatment. Lastly, staying hydrated can help manage some of the gastrointestinal side effects of antibiotics.

Avoid unnecessary use of antibiotics and always follow prescriptions. And if you need to take antibiotics, start taking probiotics as well and try eating a good balanced diet. Always consult with healthcare providers for personalized advice and treatment options.
